How GPS trackers help vehicle recovery and theft prevention

Key Takeaways:

  • GPS Trackers increase the chances of a stolen vehicle being recovered
  • Alerts can be configured for an early warning of theft in progress
  • Trackers can be a deterrent to thieves
  • GPS trackers can be combined with an immobiliser for a comprehensive security system

While traditional security measures like alarms and steering wheel locks offer some deterrence against car theft, advancements in technology have provided more sophisticated solutions.

Among these, GPS trackers and immobilisers have emerged as crucial tools in preventing vehicle theft and facilitating swift recovery.

Here, we take a closer look at the role of GPS trackers in vehicle recovery and theft prevention.

Understanding GPS trackers

GPS (Global Positioning System) trackers use satellite signals to determine the precise location of a vehicle.

These devices continuously monitor and record the vehicle’s position, transmitting real-time data to a connected device such as a smartphone, computer or dedicated monitoring service and sometime the police.

Here are some key features of GPS trackers:

  • Real-time location tracking: GPS trackers provide accurate, real-time information about the vehicle’s location, allowing owners and the police to quickly pinpoint its position.
  • Geofencing: This feature allows users to set up virtual boundaries (geofences) around specific areas. If the vehicle crosses these boundaries, the system sends an alert to the owner.
  • Movement alerts: GPS trackers can be configured to send alerts if the vehicle starts moving unexpectedly, providing an early warning of potential theft.
  • Historical data: Trackers often store historical data, enabling owners to review the vehicle’s movements over a specified period.

The role of GPS trackers in vehicle recovery

If you’ve ever had a car stolen, you’ll know that acting quickly is crucial. That’s because the sooner the police can locate and recover the vehicle, the less likely it is to be damaged or stripped for parts. GPS trackers play a crucial role in this process:

  • Rapid response: With real-time location data, vehicle owners can immediately alert the police and provide precise information about the car’s whereabouts to boost the chances of retrieving the vehicle quickly.
  • Deterrence: The presence of a GPS tracker can act as a deterrent to thieves, who may be aware of the device and the likelihood of being tracked and caught.
  • Evidence collection: GPS trackers can provide valuable data that can be used as evidence in criminal investigations, helping to identify and apprehend the criminals.

Complementing immobilisers with GPS trackers

While immobilisers are effective at preventing the unauthorised use of a vehicle, they do not offer the same level of post-theft tracking and recovery capabilities as GPS trackers.

However, combining both systems provides a comprehensive security solution which includes:

  • Layered security: Immobilisers and GPS trackers offer different layers of protection. An immobiliser, such as the Ghost Immobiliser, prevents the vehicle from being started without the correct authentication, while a GPS tracker ensures that the vehicle’s location can be monitored if a theft does occur.
  • Better recovery rates: The combination of immobilisation and tracking will increase the chances of recovering a stolen vehicle. Even if the immobiliser is bypassed or disabled, the GPS tracker can guide police officers to the vehicle’s location.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing that both preventive and recovery measures are in place provides car owners with greater peace of mind and security.

It’s also worth understanding the two types of immobiliser:

  • Factory-fitted immobilisers: Many modern vehicles come equipped with factory-fitted immobilisers, often integrated within the vehicle’s electronic systems
  • Aftermarket immobilisers: These devices, such as a Ghost Immobiliser, are installed by specialists and can offer enhanced security features beyond factory-fitted options.

Why a Ghost Immobiliser is worth considering

Aftermarket immobilisers, such as the Ghost Immobiliser system, offer a unique approach to vehicle security.

For those who don’t know much about them, the device is discreetly hidden which requires a unique driver code to be entered. This is done using the vehicle’s existing controls, such as the steering wheel buttons or dashboard. Without the correct code, the vehicle’s engine will not start.

Other advantages include being difficult for thieves to bypass, there are no visible components and the unique PIN makes it virtually impossible to guess.

Practical car security tips

In addition to using GPS trackers and immobilisers, vehicle owners can take several practical steps to boost their vehicle security and reduce the risk of theft:

  • Steering wheel locks: Make your car less attractive to a thief by using a steering wheel lock.
  • Car alarm: If your vehicle doesn’t have one fitted by the manufacturer then consider installing one – the loud alarm can alert you and others to a theft attempt, potentially scaring off the thieves.
  • Parking: Whenever possible, park in well-lit, populated areas and use secure parking facilities when possible and avoid leaving your car in isolated spots.
  • Keep your car keys in a safe place: If your car has a keyless system consider using a Faraday pouch or box.
  • Never leave valuables on display: The se can be an easy target for thieves.

You should also update your vehicle’s software regularly for security updates.

Why a GPS tracker can be useful to deter car thieves

The role of GPS trackers in vehicle recovery and theft prevention cannot be overstated. These devices provide real-time location data that is invaluable in the event of theft to help increase the chances of recovering your stolen vehicle quickly.

When combined with advanced immobilisers like the Ghost Immobiliser, vehicle owners can enjoy a comprehensive security system that addresses both prevention and recovery.
