Can You Move a Ghost Immobiliser to a New Car?

By Mike B., Software Engineer at Scorpion Automotive. Reviewed by James M., Technical Director. Published 10 September 2026. Updated 19 October 2026.

Quick answer: yes, as long as your new car is compatible with the Ghost you already have. We take it out of the old car and fit it to the new one. Contact us with both registrations for a de-fit and refit price.

What happens when we move a Ghost

  1. Compatibility check. We check the new car’s make, model and year first. Autowatch is clear that compatibility depends on all three.
  2. De-fit. We remove the Ghost from your old car and put its original wiring back as it was.
  3. Refit. We install the Ghost on the new car and set up your disarm sequence on that car’s buttons.
  4. Handover. We show you the sequence, service mode and how to change your code.

When a move is not possible

The most common reason is the new car’s network. A Ghost-II is built for the single CAN bus used on most existing cars. Many newer cars, roughly from 2024, use the faster CAN-FD network, and those need a Ghost 3. If that is your situation, we will tell you before you book anything. Our guide to upgrading to Ghost 3 explains the difference.

What about the old car?

Once the Ghost is removed, the old car goes back to its factory security and no longer needs your sequence to start. If you are selling it, that is what the new owner will expect. Remember to tell your insurer about both cars: that the Ghost has gone from one and been fitted to the other. Our page on Ghost and insurance covers what to say.

Moving it yourself

We do not recommend it. The Ghost sits on the car’s network and its wiring, and a poor removal or refit can leave either car with electrical faults. A professional move keeps both cars as they should be.

Call 0800 246 1482 or use the form on our contact page with both registrations, and we will confirm compatibility and price.

Moving a Ghost questions

  • How much does it cost to move a Ghost?

It depends on both cars. Contact us with the registrations and we will give you a de-fit and refit price.

  • Will my disarm sequence stay the same?

We set the sequence up again on the new car’s buttons. You can keep a similar pattern if the new car has suitable buttons, or choose a new one.

  • Can a Ghost-II go on a 2024 car?

Some newer cars use the CAN-FD network, which needs a Ghost 3. We check the exact car before booking.

  • Does the old car still need my code after removal?

No. Once the Ghost is removed, the car starts as it did from the factory.
