Ghost Immobilisers for Ambulances and Emergency Service Vehicles

By Sam P., R&D Technician at Scorpion Automotive. Reviewed by James M., Technical Director. Published 10 September 2026. Updated 19 October 2026.

Quick answer: yes, ambulances, police cars and other emergency vehicles can have a Ghost immobiliser fitted, as long as the base vehicle is compatible with Ghost 3 or with the Scorpion X-Series. We check the make, model and year of every vehicle before we quote, and we can fit across a fleet.

Why fit an immobiliser to an emergency vehicle?

These vehicles are often left running or unattended for short periods at a scene, and many are built on the same vans and cars that thieves already target with key cloning and relay attacks. An immobiliser on the vehicle’s own network means the vehicle will not drive away without the disarm step, even if someone has a working key.

Which immobiliser suits which vehicle

Option Works with Good for
Autowatch Ghost 3 Newer vehicles on the CAN-FD network, roughly 2024 onwards Recent ambulances and response cars
Autowatch Ghost-II Most existing vehicles on a single CAN network Older fleet vehicles where it suits the base vehicle
Scorpion X-Series Vehicles on CAN and LIN networks Base vehicles that are not a match for Ghost

The X-Series is made by Scorpion Automotive, part of the same group as Ghost Installations. Where a fleet or its insurer wants Thatcham cover, it can be paired with a Thatcham S5 or S7 tracker, so the vehicle is both immobilised and traceable.

How crews disarm it

Speed matters on a shout, so the disarm method has to be quick and simple. A Ghost uses a short sequence on buttons the vehicle already has, such as the steering wheel or window switches. Autowatch also lists key tag and smartphone disarming for Ghost 3, which suits vehicles shared by several crews. When a vehicle goes to the workshop, service mode lets the technician drive it without being given the sequence.

Before we fit

  1. Vehicle list. Send us the make, model and year of each vehicle type, or registrations.
  2. Compatibility check. We match each one to Ghost 3, Ghost-II or X-Series, or tell you if none suits.
  3. Plan the fit. We agree where the work happens and how the disarm method is shared with crews.
  4. Handover. Crews and the workshop are shown the disarm and service mode steps.

The same approach works for other specialist vehicles. Recovery and repossession operators should read our page on Ghost for recovery and repossession vehicles.

Emergency vehicle questions

  • Can a Ghost be fitted to an ambulance?

Yes, if the base vehicle is compatible with Ghost 3 or with the Scorpion X-Series. We check each vehicle type before quoting.

  • Will an immobiliser slow a crew down?

The disarm step is a short sequence on existing buttons. Ghost 3 can also use a key tag or a smartphone, which some fleets find quicker for shared vehicles.

  • How do workshops deal with it?

The vehicle goes into service mode before it is handed over, so the technician can drive it without the sequence.

  • Can the X-Series be used with a Thatcham tracker?

Yes. It works on CAN and LIN vehicle networks, and it can be paired with a Thatcham S5 or S7 tracker when a fleet or its insurer asks for Thatcham cover.
