Do Insurers Recognise the Ghost Immobiliser?

By Ian D., Head of R&D at Scorpion Automotive. Reviewed by James M., Technical Director. Published 5 October 2026. Updated 19 October 2026.

Quick answer: many UK insurers do, but there is no single rule. Autowatch describes the Ghost-II as “TASSA verified and insurance recognised”. The Ghost is an immobiliser, so it does not sit in Thatcham’s S5 or S7 tracker categories. Whether it lowers your premium is your insurer’s decision, so declare it and ask them.

What does “insurance recognised” mean?

It means insurers accept the device as genuine security when you declare it on your policy. It is not a promise of a discount. Each insurer weighs it against your car, where you live and your claims history, and some may want proof that it was professionally installed.

TASSA and Thatcham are not the same thing

These two names come up in almost every conversation about Ghost and insurance, and they do different jobs.

Body What it does Where the Ghost fits
TASSA (Tracker and Aftermarket Security Systems Association) Verifies aftermarket security products and the installers who fit them Autowatch states that Ghost-II is TASSA verified
Thatcham Research Runs the S5 and S7 categories that insurers use for stolen vehicle trackers Not applicable: the Ghost is an immobiliser, not a tracker

So if an insurer tells you they need a Thatcham product, they almost always mean a tracker. A Ghost on its own will not meet that condition. You can read how the tracker categories work in our guide to Thatcham approved trackers.

Will a Ghost lower my premium?

It can, but nobody can give you a figure in advance, and we will not pretend otherwise. Insurers price on the risk of theft, so extra security tends to matter most on the cars thieves target, such as keyless models and those that are stolen most often. The only way to know is to ask your own insurer once the Ghost is fitted.

How to tell your insurer

  1. Contact them as soon as the Ghost is fitted. Do not wait for renewal.
  2. Give the product name and model: Autowatch Ghost CAN bus immobiliser, Ghost-II or Ghost 3.
  3. Say it was professionally installed, and keep your invoice and installation paperwork somewhere safe.
  4. Ask two questions: does it change my premium, and does it change any security condition on my policy?
  5. Ask for the answer in writing or check that your policy documents have been updated.

Most policies ask you to declare security devices and modifications. Telling your insurer keeps your cover safe as well as giving them the chance to reflect it in the price.

What if my insurer wants a tracker?

Some insurers make a Thatcham S5 or S7 tracker a condition for higher value cars. In that case you need a tracker, with or without a Ghost. We fit both, and many customers choose the two together: the Ghost stops the car being driven away, and the tracker helps get it back if it is taken another way, such as on a lorry. See our insurance approved trackers or the Ghost immobiliser page for prices. If you need to hand your car to a garage after fitting, our guide to Ghost service mode explains how.

Ghost and insurance questions

  • Is the Ghost immobiliser Thatcham approved?

The Thatcham categories insurers ask for, S5 and S7, are for trackers. The Ghost is an immobiliser, and Autowatch describes the Ghost-II as TASSA verified instead. Ask your insurer which they need.

  • Does a Ghost immobiliser reduce insurance?

It can, but each insurer decides. Declare it, give the exact model and ask whether it changes your premium.

  • Do I have to tell my insurer I have a Ghost fitted?

You should. Most policies ask you to declare security devices and modifications, and leaving it off could cause problems if you claim.

  • Is Ghost 3 recognised in the same way as Ghost-II?

Autowatch’s published statement covers the Ghost-II. If you have a Ghost 3, tell your insurer the exact model and ask them directly.

  • Will my insurer want proof it was fitted?

Some do. Keep the invoice and installation paperwork you receive when the Ghost is fitted.
